Open Education Resources (OER) are digital materials used for educational purposes that are intentionally made available to the public. An increasing number of university faculty create and use such resources in their teaching. Partnering with the creators of OER is an excellent way to gather high-quality, unique content for the repository while helping to fulfill the goal of making OER widely available. This session will introduce considerations regarding the value and process of building an OER collection in the repository.

As you expand your Digital Commons-based initiatives, are you: Struggling with engaging faculty? Challenged in dealing with previously published faculty content? Interested in taking library-led publishing services to the next level?

Bepress has developed some new, value-added service offerings that may provide an answer to these challenges.

Technical reports have always posed problems for libraries and librarians. They are often bibliographically inconsistent, difficult to source, and published to varying standards of quality. In some fields, these reports are also large in number and central in importance. In many cases, technical reports are just one of many collections that are tied to a particular research center or group. These research centers or groups may also produce data papers, hosted conference proceedings, and other report series, which may also suffer from many of the same issues facing technical reports. In several situations these research centers and groups are unaware of the publishing solutions offered by their own libraries and librarians, in many cases from a minimal to no additional costs.

This breakout session will discuss a case study of how the Purdue Libraries Publishing Services division has found innovative ways to face the problems of the Joint Transportation Research Program’s technical reports and their other affiliated collections. This session will also discuss how these innovative solutions for technical reports created a domino effect for future promotion and outreach of the repository by the participating research centers and groups by the deposit of additional content and the hosting repository designation for the Purdue e-Pubs repository for the Purdue Road School Annual Conference.

No repository is successful without content to disseminate. We will discuss how IR administrators can go about targeting certain constituencies on their campus with content to share, such as working with subject liaisons in the library to outreach to departments on campus and targeting new incoming faculty and faculty with a research-specific need of the IR, such as a data management plan. We will also consider the impact capstone and research projects from the student body could have on your IR, as well as how to target campus publications struggling to transition to electronic format or faculty who wish to start an e-journal.

Here are three points for discussion. First, how can we become open access advocates? Second, would connecting open access behavior with copyright behavior increase awareness of open access and choosing open access options? And third, how can we strive towards more open OA options?

Kickstart, a Targeted Assessment, Discovery, and Population of Selected Departments on Campus

Through the generous support of Provost Geoffrey Mearns, the Kickstart service was purchased for Cleveland State University’s implementation of Digital Commons, EngagedScholarship@CSU. This outstanding service provided two types of resources to help our repository get off to a quick start. Since our training in early March 2012, we have already entered 1,191 documents and 94 associated SelectedWorks pages. We initially identified 10 departments/units on campus that produced abundant scholarly works. These departments and faculty were targeted for a scan for works in the Web of Knowledge. When results were revealed, we narrowed the field to four units. The works from these units were entered into EngagedScholarship@CSU and associated SelectedWorks pages were created. In addition, the KickStart Team conducted an environmental scan of the ten departmental websites to identify potential areas appropriate for the repository. The service is a productivity and confidence builder for staff and faculty new to the institutional repository world.

Managing a repository can mean wearing a number of different management "hats": Leading the vision of the repository, supervising support staff effectively, and facilitating department and faculty content contributions. This presentation focuses on techniques from the field of technology management, including Total Quality Management, the Five Factor Model of Leadership, Facilitation Skills, and Motivational Theories of Supervision. We will introduce these theories and focus our discussions on sharing best practices for managing repository workflows and staffing.
