Abstract

In this presentation we describe work to enhance teachers skills in facilitating comprehension of complex texts within their respective disciplines by means of text-based discussion. Participants, 19 middle school and high school content area teachers and teachers who support students with various at-risk and special education designations and their administrators, were concerned with students academic achievement. Conversations revealed that teachers were keen to engage students in higher level thinking around text, valued discussion of text, but were not sure how to do so effectively.
