Abstract

Creating a Religious Studies major, which GVSU is doing, involves perspective and hermeneutics: How does bringing multiple disciplines to the study of religion deepen an understanding of it, particularly in relationship to the pervasive, historical development of secularity in Modernity? Given different disciplinary approaches to inquiry, what is for each the object being studied? What contributions do various disciplines bring? How can students be prepared in one of the defining features of 21st century life?
