Facilitating teacher reflection in a classroom learning lab

Abstract

This session presents the experiences of teachers enrolled in a culminating graduate literacy studies practicum in which they taught K12 students. Teacher educators created teachable moments by introducing graduate candidates to a video-mediated "classroom learning lab" in which a "host" teacher taught a lesson to his or her class while "guest" teachers observed; the lesson was also video recorded. Subsequent review of selected video segments and the ensuing discussion centered on student learning provided candidates with clear insights into their own teaching, motivation to address areas they identified as needing development, and a cohort of peers willing to support that development.
