Abstract

The purpose of this project was to explore a large data set through statistical graphics and visualizations. Specifically, I chose to explore the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s complaint database[1] which is a database maintained by the United States federal government that tracks consumer complaints against various financial companies and their products. While I did most of the work in the free and open source statistical package R[2], I also created graphics in the commercial packages JMP[3] and Tableau[4] for comparison. While I do not believe I found any particularly interesting patterns or insights in the data, I did gain an appreciation of how graphics can effectively summarize large amounts of data as well as the difficulties and challenges that come with working with a real data set.
