Transaction Language 1 (TL1) is the most widely used management protocol in the telecommunication industry. Multi-million dollar optical networks can rise and fall at the talented strokes of a TL1-savvy tech's fingertips. Many vendors offer tools and agents (typically an EMS or element management system) for managing and monitoring their respective equipment or NEs (network elements). These "systems" have a tendency to be vendor specific and often times huge resource consumers as their feature sets balloon in an effort to be everything to everyone. The TL1 Agent/Node Walker project is an effort to replace much larger and less flexible EMSs with a more efficient user interface by focusing on the basic needs of the telecommunication industry using its most standardized management protocol, TL1.
