Abstract

Groups are prevalent in life, but little is known about how groups psychologically change individuals. This makes understanding group influences extremely important. Research suggests people prefer groups when feeling uncertain. Since groups provide psychological safety, it is theorized groups can impact member's thoughts, actions, and inhibitions accordingly. Thus, we predict an increased preference to be in groups when afraid or uncertain, and people will be less inhibited when in groups versus alone. To test these hypotheses, participants will respond to hypothetical scenarios and answer survey questions designed to measure when groups are preferred and how groups change individuals.
