Abstract

In schools across America, teachers struggle to motivate all their students to read within their classroom. It is necessary, therefore, that teachers structure their literacy classes in ways that encourage student motivation while providing opportunity for structured learning. Kervin et al. (2013) found that their students’ interests and engagement mainly motivated teachers when creating lessons that utilized technology. This technology use has been proven to increase student engagement and motivation within the classroom (Pragasam & Sulaiman, 2023). Researchers have been leaning into this idea and have created blended learning programs as ways to study the effectiveness of technology within the English Language Arts classroom (Cuevas et al., 2012; Pragasam & Sulaiman, 2023; Kasmaini, 2024). Not only did these studies find that utilizing technology increased student engagement and motivation, but student comprehension increased as well. This project takes this research to the 8th grade classroom by creating a science-fiction unit that allows students to autonomously learn in a blended learning environment. The hopes of the independent learning curriculum are that student comprehension will increase alongside student motivation.
