Abstract

Introduction: Immersive virtual reality (VR) offers an interactive, multisensory experience that has shown growing potential for use in cognitive rehabilitation. As the global population ages, interest in the application of VR to support cognitive health in older adults has increased. However, evidence on its impact remains fragmented and underresearched.

Objective: This scoping review mapped and synthesized the existing literature on the use of immersive VR interventions to enhance cognitive function in adults aged 65 years and older.

Methods: The scoping review followed Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) methodological framework and incorporated enhancements proposed by Levec et al. (2010). A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Applied Science and Technology Source. Articles published since 2016 that evaluated immersive VR interventions targeting cognition in older adults were included. PRISMA-ScR guidelines informed screening and data extraction.

Results: Of 1,618 studies retrieved, 45 met inclusion criteria. Three primary themes emerged: cognitive domains most frequently targeted included executive function, memory, and attention; immersive VR promoted engagement, motivation, and adherence; and interventions were feasible and well tolerated with minimal adverse effects.

Conclusions: Immersive VR shows promise for enhancing cognitive outcomes and engagement among older adults. Future studies should establish standardized intervention protocols, assess long-term efficacy, and explore implementation in diverse care settings.
