Abstract

Background: Developing simulations in healthcare based programs is an important goal for educating entry-level occupational therapy (OT) students. The aim of this literature review was to analyze current research to investigate the best practices to develop simulations in entry-level occupational therapy programs. From scholarly literature, studies were explored that evaluated the effectiveness of simulation education in graduate programs across disciplines. This topic is relevant to the field of OT as it concerns the education of entry-level occupational therapy students. Improvements in education strategies through simulation programs can prepare students to be well-prepared practitioners who provide quality care. This research will provide insight into what skills are needed to be an effective healthcare worker. This research will also highlight the potential benefits simulations can have in healthcare.

Methods: Studies published within the last 15 years were searched using databases, including CINAHL and PubMed. A concept map of GVSU MSOT simulation objectives.

Results: 7 tables displayed the connection between the ACOTE standards and different GVSU MSOT simulations and also addressed the simulations in correspondence to Bloom's Taxonomy Domains.

Conclusions: Through a comprehensive literature review, findings suggest that simulation is an effective tool for developing skills needed for future occupational therapists including professional reasoning, clinical competence, and confidence. Simulation bridges gaps between the academic knowledge and real word application providing an opportunity for students to practice skills in a safe environment before level 2 fieldwork and professional practice.
