Abstract

Multilingual learners with dyslexia face unique challenges in the identification process

and literacy instruction because the characteristics of dyslexia can overlap with the difficulties

associated with second-language acquisition. Even though some research supports the use of

evidence-based screening and literacy practices, teachers may not have the knowledge or

preparation needed to accurately assess and interpret screening data, distinguish between

dyslexia characteristics and language acquisition, or implementing appropriate instructional

supports in their classrooms. This project looks closely at the research on the identification and

instructional support of multilingual learners with dyslexia with a focus on teacher preparation

and professional development. The literature indicates that effective support requires multiple

data points for students, like students linguistic and cultural background and the use of

evidence-based literacy practices. Research also suggests that teachers may have limited

knowledge and confidence related to dyslexia and require professional learning that is

collaborative, content-focused, and connected to classroom practices. Based on these finding, a

professional development plan was developed to prepare teachers and support staff to better

support multilingual students with dyslexia. The professional development focuses on defining

dyslexia and characteristics of multilingual learners, distinguishing characteristics of dyslexia

from second-language acquisition, interpreting screening data through culturally and

linguistically responsive view, and implementing evidence-based practices. The project

demonstrates the importance of equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to

identify and effectively support multilingual learners with dyslexia.
