Abstract

Neurocognitive diseases, especially Alzheimer's, have been well documented in the media as of late. Diseases that coincide with aging affect millions of people around the world. Recent research has suggested that there could be a link between vascular dementia and the blood-brain barrier. This study reviews the basic make up and function of the blood-brain barrier. Specifically, this review discusses what causes blood-brain barrier damage and the consequences of this pathological process in relation to neurocognitive disorders.
