Abstract

Using a collection of academic journals, primary sources, and organization references, this paper explores the history of lower limb prosthetics. By focusing on the use, physical description, accessibility, cost, prevalence, and analyzing the work of prominent figures in the history of lower limb prosthetics throughout time traces the evolution of these devices and gives implications for the future of this field. Finally, this paper sequences the evolution of lower limb prosthetic use from assisting basic mobility into allowing amputees to return to the lives and hobbies they enjoyed before amputation, along with the growing accessibility of lower limb prosthetic devices.
