Book Review of Philosophy Americana: Making Philosophy at Home in American Culture

Abstract

Book Review of Douglas Anderson’s Philosophy Americana: Making Philosophy at Home in American Culture, 2006. Anderson pulls on the resources of American philosophy in order to address issues within our popular culture today. In this collection of essays, he addresses the negligible impact of modern philosophy today, a need to return to the wild, to take on the gambling nature of life and yet to work with certainty and within a sensible mysticism. The themes of wildness, gambling, loss, and transition resonate through American philosophy, but take on a distinctive, modern perspective which will speak for and to some readers more than others.
