Abstract

Research on professional development for teachers of English learners indicated it is unlikely that the knowledge and skills presented at workshops will transfer to classroom practice without continued support and ongoing professional development. Yet many of the professional development opportunities available to teachers of English learners, including training in the SIOP Model provided to all teachers at Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, have not been revisited to reflect this research. This project explores the common element of professional developments for teachers of English learners that have proven to be successful in transforming teacher practices: meaningful workshop content, peer/instructional coach observation, teacher collaboration, and instructional coaching. These elements are then combined to create an ongoing, employment-embedded professional development program in the SIOP Model for teachers at Godfrey-Lee Public Schools.
