Abstract

Xiyou ji and Fengshen yanyi are two of the most influential fictional works about gods and demons from late imperial China. Both works were published in the late Ming period after a long history of textual evolution. They are comparable in the cosmological scope they present and share characters and in-text verses. The differences between them in the presentation of the supernatural world are very significant in revealing the diversity of the late Ming conceptions about gods and demons.
