Abstract
In 2010, the in-house interdisciplinary journal of Grand Valley State University, The Grand Valley Review, transformed into a journal with a regional focus. Its new title is Wake: Great Lakes Thought & Culture. The mission of the new journal is to define and discover the region of the Great Lakes through its history, culture, art, and scholarship. Right now, that region is more commonly categorized as "Midwest." Part of the challenge of the new journal has been to reorient people geographically to discover the common links provided by the climate, economy, and culture of the Great Lakes area. This presentation will discuss the process of creating such a regional journal as well as the challenges of defining a region according to culture.
