Abstract

As one of the segments of my large Bilingual Anthology of Croatian Poetry in English Translation (16th to 21st Century) - work in progress - the poetry dealing with political and economic oppression and the incessant struggle for freedom and democracy in Croatia, a country with a very tempestuous history, is very prominent and of a great poetic and documentary value. This paper analyses a large and representative selection of that poetry, from the early 16th century to the present time, all in my own translation into English, and draws significant conclusions about the themes, techniques, and the aesthetic and documentary value of that poetry.
