Abstract
I received an invitation to attend the 2011 The ISCAEE (International Society for Ceramic Art Education and Exchange) International Ceramic Art Symposium in Japan. The symposium is one of the largest international ceramic symposia and this year 32 universities from 15 countries were invited to participate in the symposium, including GVSU. I will be participating in this international event for two weeks to take part in the symposium by exhibiting my work, giving a presentation about the GVSU Ceramics program, and attending many activities during the symposium. Also, as the GVSU Ceramics program coordinator, I am organizing the GVSU Ceramics FASA (Faculty Accompanying Students Abroad) Program in Japan. I will be taking 5 of my students to the symposium and they will take part in the symposium by showing their work and demonstrating atmosphere firing techniques. During the symposium, I, as the GVSU ceramics program coordinator and as a liaison with the Japanese ceramics community, will engage in the following activities: 1) Participate in and attend The ISCAEE (International Society for Ceramic Art Education and Exchange) International Ceramic Art Symposium in Japan; 2) Research student exchange program possibilities between GVSU and International Universities participating the symposium; 3) Visit prominent contemporary art galleries, private artists studios, and ceramics programs in universities; 4) Explore new pedagogical possibilities for application within the GVSU ceramics program; and 5) Further establish GVSU's relationship within the international ceramics community.
