Abstract
In this communication, we present a recent necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of absolute weak minimizers that applies to energy functionals with scale invariance including those appearing in the pioneering work of J. Ball in 1982 on the pure displacement boundary value problem of nonlinear hyper-elasticity. We also discuss the new perspective that this result brings to the wide, open regularity question associated with such problems that would replace the delicate phase plane analysis.
