Abstract

Research shows that academic vocabulary is important for English Learners (ELs) to develop English proficiency and achieve academic success. Today, students are remaining in EL services longer and are underachieving academically. This persistent lack of proficiency and academic progress can limit students’ future educational and career opportunities, as strong language skills are essential for long-term success.

This project explores evidence-based instructional strategies specifically designed to support vocabulary acquisition and assessment for ELs. By applying these strategies within a middle school Health Education unit, the project aims to create learning experiences that build both general and academic vocabulary. The unit not only targets essential health content but also scaffolds academic vocabulary, supporting EL students with the language tools needed for academic achievement.
