My PSM Biostatistics Internship at National Heritage Academies

Description
PURPOSE: The Professional Science Masters programs focus on preparing students for a career. To do this, the program requires a 400 hour internship. The internship is meant to give the student experience working as a statistician in a professional setting. CHALLENGE: My internship was held at National Heritage Academies which is a charter school management company. In the position, I worked as a part of the information and analytics team. The challenge was to apply classroom skills on real world projects and collaborate with individuals from a variety of different teams and backgrounds to accomplish company objectives. EXPERIENCE: The main project I worked on was the Gallup Teacher Insight study where I used data analytics to assess the strength of the relationship between Teacher Insight scores and teacher outcomes. OUTCOME: My analysis found that while there was a statistically significant relationship between scores on the Teacher Insight test and teacher outcomes, the relationship was not strong enough to have any practical usefulness. As a result, the company decided to use a different tool. IMPACT: Through my internship I was able to apply classroom skills to solve real business problems and present the results to a variety of different groups. I also gained experience in other skills such as communication and time management.
