PURPOSE: Social media presents many opportunities for universities and colleges to create relationships, build school pride and share inspirational stories. It is a digital environment that greatly influences the decisions of prospective high school students searching for their next step. Higher education has recognized its importance and is successfully adopting social media best practices. PROCEDURES: Secondary and primary research was conducted to determine current use of social media in higher education and how these tools are used locally at Grand Valley State University. RESULTS: The results indicate that the expectations of followers and audiences of a college or university’s engaging social media presence will continue to grow. The goal of this research is to provide insights into the future of social media in higher education.
