Event Title

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Internship Experience

Location

Loosemore Auditorium

Description

PURPOSE: During my time at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM), I gained practical experience and knowledge about managing large amounts of data and the insurance industry. It allowed me to obtain knowledge about one of the largest healthcare organizations in the state. CHALLENGE: The most challenging aspect of my internship was getting comfortable with the terminology that the insurance industry uses, which was overcome by continuously using the terminology in projects and conversations. EXPERIENCE: This internship allowed me to work on many different projects in the insurance industry. The biggest project was completing regression testing on test claims that were affected by government-mandated changes. Other projects included SharePoint site updates, identifying global versus group-specific tables, updating ICD-10 codes, and planning a virtual networking event for interns. OUTCOME: By having many different projects throughout the summer, I saw Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan from many different angles. I developed and maintained a solid understanding of BCBSM and the insurance industry. Through the networking opportunities, I explored the many different facets of a large organization. IMPACT: The insurance benefit changes that I worked on affect BCBSM insurance holders to ensure that these people are receiving the changed insurance benefit, at minimum, or better. This internship impacted me by developing many soft skills, like communication and time management, and developed my analytical and programming skills.
