Abstract
The present research uncovers the factors impacting the underrepresentation of minorities within the Frederik Meijer Honors College (FMHC) at Grand Valley State University. Our findings shed light on the systematic barriers’ minority students encounter during their time within the FMHC. Our qualitative data was obtained through a sample of convenience. The findings of this research are as follows: 1.) The location of the honors program building, Niemeyer Learning and Living Center, provides a barrier for students to feel included within the program; 2.) There is a negative stereotype of honors students that can cause stress on honors students; 3.) Students felt a negative impact from the lack of diversity within their honors courses. Ultimately, our research shows that the lack of diversity is undermining the experience of minority students in the honors college, and this constitutes a substantial concern.
