Abstract
Background: Homestay tourism offers a unique opportunity for tourists to experience local cultures and for communities to gain economic benefits. However, in Jammu and Kashmir, local community participation in homestay tourism remains low. Understanding the factors contributing to this non-participation is crucial for promoting sustainable tourism and ensuring that local communities can benefit from this industry.
Objective: This study aims to explore the reasons behind local community non-participation in homestay tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, identify the barriers and challenges faced by these communities, and suggest strategies for enhancing local participation in homestay tourism.
Methodology: A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing thematic analysis to gain in-depth insights into the issue. Data was collected through interviews in villages of Jammu and Kashmir. Thirty respondents, including local residents, potential homestay hosts, and community leaders, were purposively sampled to provide diverse perspectives.
Findings: The analysis revealed several socio-economic, cultural, social, and institutional barriers to participation. Economic constraints, such as high initial investment and financial risk, were significant deterrents. Cultural norms emphasizing family privacy and hospitality within known circles, alongside gender roles and social pressures, further hindered participation. Additionally, the study highlighted the inadequacy of government policies, lack of effective support mechanisms, and infrastructure deficiencies as major obstacles. Community perceptions reflected both recognition of potential benefits and concerns about practical implementation and cultural impact.
Conclusion: Addressing the identified barriers requires targeted financial support, comprehensive awareness and training programs, infrastructure development, and culturally sensitive promotional strategies. Active involvement of local leaders and transparent, supportive policies are essential for fostering community participation in homestay tourism. By implementing these strategies, Jammu and Kashmir can leverage homestay tourism for sustainable socio-economic development and cultural preservation.
