Author Biographies

Sara Hoeve is a doctoral candidate in English Education at Western Michigan University. She currently teaches at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, and works as an Instructional Coach for Grandville Calvin Christian Schools.

Abstract

This article recounts one teaching partnership and the effort to address student empathy through a unit that began with the text To Kill a Mockingbird and culminated in a digital writing assignment. Using the SMART goal model, this unit was created, developed and implemented collaboratively by the classroom teacher and her instructional coach. The author narrates the following process: Goal Brainstorming, Goal Planning, Assessment of Empathy, Project Design, Scaffolding, and Results Analysis. Finally, the article considers the novel’s treatment of race and recommends further texts for study.
