For Contributors

Rules for Submission

Ought welcomes contributions from scholars, researchers, writers, and artists. Contributors are the initial owners of the copyright to their submitted article. Ought does not accept author submitted reprints, but the editorial board/editor-in-chief may seek out or invite reprints for select issues. In addition, by submitting material to Ought, the contributor is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that he or she will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at Ought. Formatting Requirements

All submitted materials (initial and final submissions) should follow the Submission Preparation Guidelines.

The Review Process

Ought will review all submitted materials. For each issue, the review process begins after the deadline and follows these steps.

  • Initial Evaluation. Each contribution is evaluated by the editorial staff (Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, and Editorial Board Members). If the contribution is determined to be worth further review, it is assigned to three peer reviewers. If the editorial staff deems the submission unfit for the call, its creator is notified within 1-2 weeks of the deadline.
  • Peer Review. Contribution is sent to three peer reviewers, who within 30 days submit a detailed review and recommendation to reject, accept with major revisions, accept with minor revisions, or accept as is.
  • Resubmission. Editors notify contributors, who receive detailed reviews and have 14 days to resubmit the contribution (if necessary). Materials that require minor or major revisions are not guaranteed publication, should the contributor fail to meet the expectations of the reviewers or the editors.
  • Preview. Accepted contributions are published in PDF form; contributors are encourage to proof their individual pieces with care.
  • Publication. Contributors receive notification that the issue of Ought has been published online, usually 1-2 weeks after the preview stage.

Rights for Contributors

Creators and artists who contribute to Ought are the initial owners of the copyrights to their works, and they retain copyright even after publication of Ought, in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial 4.0 International License

General Terms and Conditions of Use

Users of the ScholarWorks@GVSU website and/or software agree not to misuse the ScholarWorks@GVSU service or software in any way. The failure of ScholarWorks@GVSU to exercise or enforce any right or provision in the policies or the Submission Agreement does not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. If any term of the Submission Agreement or these policies is found to be invalid, the parties nevertheless agree that the court should endeavor to give effect to the parties' intentions as reflected in the provision, and the other provisions of the Submission Agreement and these policies remain in full force and effect. These policies and the Submission Agreement constitute the entire agreement between ScholarWorks@GVSU and the Creator(s) regarding submission of the work.
