Description
Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies (BCOIS) at Grand Valley State University (GV) just concluded its twentieth-anniversary year—the college began operating as the College of University-wide Interdisciplinary Initiatives (CUII) in the Fall of 2004. But interdisciplinary studies at GV has a much longer history. “Interdisciplinarity,” a term that defies definition, has been a touchstone of many GV academic program since 1968, when the School of General Studies began operation, leading to the creation of the Cluster College system two years later. In the 1980s, the Cluster Colleges closed and their programs and majors moved into a new divisional structure. This study, focused chiefly on academic programs, begins with a brief outline of the history of the Cluster Colleges and then goes on to detail how the arrival of a new provost in 2002 revived and reshaped the idea of an independent college dedicated to interdisciplinary experiments.
