Abstract
Grand Valley State University Art Education students prepared and taught studio art projects to visiting special needs students of age from 16 to 22 years old. The Fall 2012 project focused on art-making within the confines of Outer Space. Students created a backdrop of the night sky, and a 3-D planet with a surface environment. Knowledge and research skills were applied through a) preparation of the project, b) problem solving emerging ideas or/and technical challenges, c) inventing new communication strategies, d) collaboration with special needs students. From reflective writing and visual documentation the presentation will share findings of how this non-traditional teaching practice can be applied in a K-8 classroom. It advocates for the power of art and art-making in the development of a student with special needs.
