Abstract

Why did the United States government seem to look the other way that it did during the Argentine Dirty War in the 1970s? The Dirty War was a period of state terrorism in Argentina and guerrilla warfare during the 1970s. Victims of the violence included several thousand left-wing activists and militants, including trade unionists, students, journalists, Marxists, Peronist guerrillas and alleged sympathizers. Thousands upon of people disappeared during this time period and the United States government was aware of this, and even supported the Argentine military government, despite Congress' prohibition on aid to countries with poor human rights records. My presentation will describe this Dirty War, discuss the ways US foreign policy failed to address it, and examine reasons why the US government took this course of action.
