Abstract

To what extent did the United States government become involved in the campaigns and presidency of Chilean Salvador Allende and did it play a central role in his eventual downfall? Based on declassified CIA documents as well as Chilean primary and secondary sources, my presentation will argue that if not central, the US government played at least a crucial role in ending a democratic regime, and ushering in a military one. I will focus on the years 1958-1973, from Allende's first bid for the presidency to the infamous 1973 military coup in which he died.
