Abstract

Summary

The regulating emotions while researching slide can be used as a stand-alone learning object or it can be added to an existing lesson plan. It is used to provoke discussion of the research cycle, emotional regulation, and library services in a manner that is relatable to students.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to recognize the research cycle as an iterative, interconnected process.

Students will be able to identify the emotional states associated with the research process.

Students will be able to access library resources and services.

Lesson

Display the research cycle regulating emotions slide. Ask students to share an example of when research went well. Ask for an example of when research didn’t go well or felt challenging. What emotions did they feel? Normalize experiencing a range of emotions while conducting research. Researchers and scholars at every level experience emotional highs and lows. When experiencing strong emotions it can be helpful to engage in another activity or seek support. Ask students to share an example of an activity or service that aids in emotional regulation.

Discuss the library resources and services available to students, particularly those supporting research.

Activity

Break students into groups. Assign each group a library resource or service. Ask them to use a computer to navigate to their assigned library resource or service web page and write down what it is, how it can be accessed, and when it is available (hours of operation). Ask each group to share their findings with the class.
