Abstract
Kindergarten education in the United States has undergone many transformations throughout the course of history. Emphasis is now placed on achieving heightened literacy standards and expectations rather than developing students’ social and emotional learning through play. This shift has shown to have negative effects on teachers, parents, and the kindergarten students themselves. Many students are not developmentally prepared to engage in the rigorous kindergarten curriculum, and many parents lack the knowledge, resources, and confidence necessary to facilitate an early home literacy environment for their children. However, research has revealed that hosting a family literacy night for parents and incoming kindergarteners can support them in completing emergent literacy activities at home and ultimately set their children up for academic success.
