Abstract

Abstract

Learning how words work is an essential skill within the literacy development of elementary students. There are many different opinions of how reading should be taught. One framework through which reading instruction is delivered is balanced literacy. One structure within the balanced literacy framework is teaching reading through the use of guided reading groups. There are many components included in a guided reading lesson and word work is one of those components. This project is meant to be a guide to help bridge the gap between explicit phonics instruction and studying words in context. This project is designed to provide second grade teachers with mini-lessons that teach explicit phonics skills using words found in guided reading books. The goal of this project is an increase in phonological awareness for second grade students. The components of this project include a scope and sequence and phonics lessons that are aligned with book levels H-M from the Fountas and Pinnel leveling guide. The intent of this project is to bring better balance to the balanced literacy framework and equip teachers to reinforce phonics instruction through the guided reading lesson structure.
