Abstract

Older students have gaps in their foundational literacy skills, especially phonics. This project explores the causes of the literacy skills gaps and what types of interventions and instruction can support closing those phonics skills gaps in students who are in third through sixth grade. Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory framework provides systematic, explicit instruction to support students in their phonics and reading skills. Although this research focuses on students' skills, how teachers supply the instruction is essential to helping students. This project provides various assessments to narrow down where a student is missing a skill and some activities to support the student during one-on-one or small-group instruction.
