Sex Offender Treatment Panel: An Ethical Approach

Location

Hager-Lubbers Exhibition Hall

Description

PURPOSE: The NASW Code of Ethics requires that practitioners respect the inherent dignity and worth of all individuals, yet many social workers struggle to empathize with sex offenders. This is concerning because most will work with a sex offender at some point in their career. Empathy training and preparation are needed. PROCEDURES: In this project, Supporting the Sex Offender Panel, sex offender treatment practitioners discussed best practices, myths, and barriers to success when working with this population. OUTCOME: 36 social work professionals and students participated in the live training and the recording and materials are available through the GVSU Social Work Continuing Education Program for the next two years. IMPACT: The aim is to increase empathy for sex offenders among social workers to improve treatment outcomes.
