Abstract
Civic Studio, an applied experimental art studio project at GVSU takes art students into a Grand Rapids neighborhood to engage with the city’s history, encourage a sense of community, understand civic responsibility, and create a context for art that reflects a sense of place within society. Each student researches a square block of the city. That’s where the librarians come in – one from GVSU, one from GRPL. Together, we help students delve into the physical, digital, and demographical resources that will inform their art.
