Abstract
Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Latin America and is currently plagued with high levels of violence and a degraded level of public safety. This study will attempt to shed light on the question of how the US CIA intervention of 1954 played a role in the deterioration of this country. The US thought it necessary to exercise its role in Latin America by removing the president, Jacobo Arbenz Gúzman, from office by force. Drawing on primary and secondary source material, my presentation will show how this covert operation caused a newly democratizing country to eventually collapse into a thirty-year civil war with catastrophic consequences in terms of public violence.
